SKLZ Pro Mini Hoop Midnight

Turn off the lights and the game keeps going: the pro-style graphics, the net and the 5-inch ball on the SKLZ Pro Mini Hoop Midnight all glow in the dark. The rest is built like a shrunken real hoop, with an 18 by 12 inch clear polycarbonate backboard that’s shatter-proof and a 9-inch steel rim on a spring-action breakaway that bounces back after a dunk.

It hangs over a door frame with slide-on mounts that have foam padding to keep the door free of marks, so there’s no drilling, and it can move from a bedroom to a basement whenever he wants. The net is heavy-duty 3-ply nylon built for daily use, and the indoor-safe rubber ball comes in the box, so play starts the minute it’s up.

It suits a teen who shoots imaginary jumpers at the trash can, needs a break between homework and video games, or wants to practice bank shots without going outside. SKLZ pitches it for dorm rooms and offices too, which means it can follow him to college later.

The catch: it’s a mini, with a 5-inch ball and a 9-inch rim, so it’s for quick shots and trick-shot contests in a small room. It also needs clear space in front of the door, and a dunk contest in a bedroom is never quiet for whoever is in the next room.
