In Coup, lying is allowed. Each turn you take one action by claiming a role, and you don’t have to hold that role to claim it. The only thing stopping you is someone at the table calling your bluff.
That’s the engine, and it’s a sharp one. A turn is a single action, so play moves quickly, and the rules are compact enough to teach in a few minutes. The depth arrives later, once a group starts reading each other, keeping track of who claimed what and deciding when a challenge is worth the risk. Every game plays out differently because the table writes the story as it goes. It’s built for 2 to 6 players, and with so few components it comes in a small box that slides easily into a stocking.
It suits the guy who wins poker night, the one who is suspiciously good at keeping a straight face, and any group that wants a short game to open or close an evening of longer ones.
The catch: the whole game is accusing your friends of lying, and some tables find that more fun than others. For a group that hates confrontation, even the pretend kind, it can fall flat.
