Fenix HL45R Rechargeable Headlamp

The Fenix HL45R has a focusing ring you twist like a camera lens: one way gives a wide floodlight for the inside of a tent, the other narrows it to a spotlight that throws 240 yards. At the top end it puts out 1000 lumens.

A rotary switch and a push button run four white levels and three red modes, including a red flash for signaling, and gesture sensing lets you operate it hands-free when your fingers are greasy from dinner. It charges over USB-C in about three hours and runs up to 54 hours on its lowest setting. If it dies deep in the woods, it also runs on three ordinary AAA batteries, so a spare pack of batteries is a real backup. It’s rated IP66 waterproof, built to survive a 1-meter drop, and comes with a USB-C cable and an organizer.

It suits the camper who handles the after-dark chores: finding the last tent stake, washing up, and the midnight walk to the bathroom. Trail runners and anglers who are out before sunrise will like it too.

The catch: that 54-hour runtime is for the lowest mode, so expect much less on full power, and 1000 lumens is more light than most campsite chores need.
