Star Trek Electronic Door Chime

Someone crosses the threshold, and this Star Trek Electronic Door Chime supplies the door-opening sound effect. That is a nicely specific job for a piece of fan gear: giving an ordinary doorway a little starship atmosphere. The motion-sensitive unit mounts on either side of a door, with a design modeled after the show’s communicator panels.

There are two sound settings: Door Opening for everyday arrivals and Red Alert for a more dramatic entrance. A button on the front also plays the Communicator Whistle, so you do not have to walk through the doorway every time you want that particular noise. Red Alert feels like a strong choice for the entrance to a home office where interruptions are already treated as emergencies.

This officially licensed ThinkGeek chime suits the Trek fan who wants something to interact with rather than just display. It measures 6 1/2 by 5 1/4 by 1 inch and requires three AA batteries. The appeal is the sound effects, not a door that actually slides open.
