Bioluminescent PyroDino Bio-Orb

Dinoflagellates are single-celled marine plankton, and when something jostles them they flash light through a chemical reaction inside their cells. This orb is a 4-inch hand-blown glass sphere holding 200ml of them, sealed with a silicone stopper and fed with 100ml of DinoNutrients. Swirl it in a dark room and the water lights up in a soft flicker, which makes it a good fit for a curious kid, a classroom shelf, or a science nerd who likes watching biology do something odd.

Set your expectations on brightness. The glow is faint and brief, closer to a sparkle than a lamp, so it works best with the lights off and your eyes adjusted. Don’t buy it to light a hallway. The plankton need low to moderate indirect light during the day to stay healthy, so a hot, sunny windowsill is a bad spot and a dark drawer is worse. Follow the included care instructions and treat it as a small aquarium that happens to glow.

Day to day, it needs you to pay attention to it. You are keeping something alive, and the glow depends on the plankton staying well, so it is a living display rather than a fixed gadget. If you want something that sits on a desk and needs nothing from you, look elsewhere.
