Give the handle a spin and let go, and it keeps turning for a moment on its own. That’s the built-in bearing in the Timemore Chestnut C3S, and it’s a good hint at how smoothly this hand grinder is put together. The body is solid aluminum alloy and 52 millimeters across, slim enough for smaller hands to hold steady.
Inside is Timemore’s patented S2C660 conical burr, cut on a 5-axis CNC machine from steel rated 55 to 58 HRC. The burr is designed for an even grind with almost no oversized chunks and very little fine powder. An adjustment nut offers about 36 settings from fine to coarse: clockwise for finer, counterclockwise for coarser. The handle folds down, so the grinder packs into a bag for travel or camping, and cleanup is a quick brushing.
It suits the person who has started buying good beans but still pulverizes them in a whirring blade grinder, and the camper who wants fresh grounds at the campsite. With no motor, it’s also a quiet choice for an early riser who doesn’t want to wake the house.
The catch: it’s a hand grinder, so every brew starts with turning a crank. For one or two cups that’s part of the ritual. For a full pot every morning, it can start to feel like a workout.
