The HitchSafe Key Vault gives your trailer hitch a second job: holding the keys you don’t want bouncing around in your pocket on a hike. Its metal drawer slides into most standard 2-inch hitch receivers, with room for keys, cash and up to two cards. A rubber hitch cover keeps the arrangement looking like, well, a hitch.

Anyone heading outdoors who wants a spare key along but not every last thing will find this a sensible fit. The drawer uses a four-digit combination lock, and two retaining bars secure the vault inside the receiver. Installation requires no tools, so this isn’t a project that needs its own free weekend.

Key fobs need extra thought. The vault alone doesn’t block their radio signals, so you need a separate Faraday bag to prevent the stored fob from allowing vehicle access. Check your receiver compatibility, too: some Toyota pickups require a separately sold bolt set. Clever little hiding place, provided your vehicle plays along.
