This puzzle traces back to 1905, when a puzzle craze produced a deceptively simple thing called the Devil’s Claws. Hanayama’s designer reworked it into two smooth, matching pieces of cast metal hooked together, and the whole job is to separate them and then put them back.

It looks like a two-second job until you try it. Hanayama rates it a 4 on its own 1 to 6 difficulty scale. The designer’s note is half warning and half dare: don’t trust the smooth looks, and people who let frustration win tend to leave it unsolved forever. The one hint offered is the word “claws.”

At about 3.5 by 1.75 by 0.75 inches, it fits in a pocket or sits on a desk for idle fiddling during long calls. It suits the engineer who reads a problem statement twice before touching anything, and the software developer who likes a bug that can’t be solved by searching for the answer.

The catch: level 4 isn’t a warm-up. Someone who doesn’t enjoy being stuck may find it more annoying than fun, and once they’ve solved it, the challenge is mostly gone. It’s a small gift, best tucked in with something bigger or used as a stocking stuffer.
